Water slide at Winfield Aquatic Center could reopen soon

A closed water slide at the Winfield Aquatic Center could reopen this week, city officials said.

An inspection of the slide is scheduled for today, and a reopening could happen on Friday, should the inspection raise no issues. The side was closed last week as result of a new state law.

City officials received notice that the city would be impacted by amendments to the Kansas Amusement Ride Act and the Amusement Ride Insurance Act. The law, signed by Gov. Sam Brownback, requires a permit for all waterslides over 15 feet in height that use water to propel riders.

The law was effective July 1.

By law, the city will also be required to register with the Kansas Dept. of Labor as an amusement ride owner. One of the slides at the Winfield Aquatic Center is over 15 feet.

Ark City officials said the law could also affect a slide at the Paris Park Pool. However, no slides in Ark City have been closed.
