Cowley County Sheriff’s and local fire investigators are looking into the cause of a suspicious fire overnight that destroyed a single-wide trailer home east of Winfield.

Deputies were initially dispatched to 19979 151st Rd. around 2:40 a.m. for the report of a domestic disturbance. They arrived to find smoke coming from a structure.

The trailer soon became fully engulfed in fire.

A deputy reported hearing what sounded like popping noises from inside the residence and believed it could either be gunshot or noises from the fire itself, according to a statement from Sheriff David Falletti.

A perimeter was established and fire department crews from Winfield and Atlanta arrived to extinguish the blaze. The trailer is considered a total loss.

Radio traffic indicated that authorities were searching for someone in connection with the incident, however, Falletti said investigators have yet to confirm the identity of anyone potentially responsible for starting the fire.

A preliminary search of the scene has been conducted and so far there is no indication anyone was inside the trailer, he said.
