AC Teen Trapped For Hours Inside Truck After Accident Near Winfield Cemetery

Work crews discovered a partially-rolled pickup truck near a Winfield cemetery Monday morning and emergency crews were called to free the 18-year-old Ark City man inside of it.

Keaton Kazban was transported to an area hospital for treatment of what were believed to be potentially serious but not life-threatening injuries. An update as to his current condition was not immediately available.

Winfield police and emergency personnel were called around 8:40 a.m. to the area of Highland Cemetery in the southern portion of the city. A work crew, starting their work week, noticed a pickup had gone off Amos Becker Rd., which provides access to the cemetery.

The accident occurred at a winding portion of that road. Kazban went off the south side, through a barbed-wire fence and struck at least one tree, according to Winfield Police Lt. Robbie DeLong.

“Obviously with it being dark no one saw him overnight,” DeLong said. “It’s a curvy area of the road. If you’re not familiar with it, it wouldn’t take much for a curve to surprise you.”

The truck came to rest on its side and Kazban’s injuries kept him from being able to free himself. He was conscious when help arrived and told police he was trapped for several hours.

The accident happened sometime after midnight. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
