Contractors got a head start on an asphalt overlay project on the road around Cowley State Fishing Lake and finished the project in considerably less time than projected. The lake is open again to visitors.
The project had been scheduled to begin today and close the lake for two weeks. Contractors started early and finished the project today.
Cornejo & Sons LLC of Wichita placed a four-inch asphalt overlay over the road. Cowley State Fishing Lake is about 16 miles east of Arkansas City immediately adjacent to U.S. Highway 166.

An overlay project is also underway on 77 between Winfield and Ark City. Traffic is reduced to one lane where necessary.
