Winfield Brothers Plead Guilty To Aggravated Robbery, Face Prison Time

Two Winfield brothers pleaded guilty today to one count each of aggravated robbery in connection with a September incident investigated by Burden Police.

In exchange for a guilty plea, all other charges against 18-year-old Johnathen B. Jones and 19-year-old Jaylen R. Jones, were dropped. Sentencing for Johnathen B. Jones is set for 2 p.m. June 18 in Winfield.

Jaylen Jones is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. on June 25. Both will be sentenced by Cowley County Dist. Court Judge Nick St. Peter.

Johnathen B. Jones is likely to get 72 months, or six years, in prison, court officials said. Jaylen Jones is expected to get a sentence of approximately 80 months.

Both Joneses, in exchange for having other charges dropped, have agreed not to ask for probation or seek a reduction in their sentences.

Each admitted to causing their victim bodily harm and stealing property that included a bank card, cash and cell phone. The crime occurred on Sept. 11, 2017.

A juvenile female has also been charged with similar crimes.

On Sept. 11 of last year, police investigated a report that a man had been robbed at gunpoint, attacked and left stranded in the trunk of a vehicle. The victim first said the incident occurred in Winfield, however, that was determined to not be true.

Burden Police began investigating the case and formal charges were then filed.
The men were also charged in a string of burglaries in the Burden area that were said to have occurred late on Sept. 16 or early Sept. 17. Those charges were dropped as a result of the plea agreement.

Johnathen Jones was just three months short of his 18th birthday when the alleged crimes occurred and thus was charged as an adult.
