Winfield Man Arrested After Pregnant Woman Is Burned With Boiling-Hot Water

One man was arrested Wednesday afternoon as the result of an incident in which a pregnant woman was badly burned by boiling-hot water.

20-year-old Shemar Muldrow-Abington, of Winfield, was booked into the Cowley County Jail on a count of aggravated domestic battery. The 19-year-old woman was not identified by name.

Around 1:10 p.m. yesterday, Winfield Police were called to the 1900 building of St. James Court for the report of a disturbance. They arrived to find a woman with burns to her face, right hand and abdomen, according to police Sgt. Greg Venable.

The woman was pregnant and scheduled for a c-section this week.

She was transported by ambulance to William Newton Hospital with what were thought to be second-degree burns.

Police investigated and learned that Abington and the woman were related. There had been previous tension and arguing between Abington and the woman.

As she cooked lunch Wednesday for her brother, Abington showed up at the residence and began loudly banging on the door. The woman answered the door with a pot of boiling water in her hands and asked Abington to leave or she would call police.

A verbal exchange continued and Abington is accused of forcefully pushing the pot of water so that it overturned onto the woman. There was a witness to the altercation.

Abington was at the scene when police arrived and was placed under arrest.
