Winfield Warden Emmalee Conover Retiring After 22 Years At The Helm

Winfield Correctional Facility Warden Emmalee Conover has announced her retirement after 34 years with the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. Her departure is effective Nov. 1.

Conover has been warden in Winfield since Sept. 1, 1996, giving her the longest tenure of any currently-serving warden in the state.

Corrections officials said the Winfield Correctional Facility and Wichita Work Release Facility have thrived due to warden Conover’s commitment and diligent work.

“She has continually strived to promote public safety while making a difference in the lives of offenders on a daily basis. She has always encouraged her staff to do the same,” corrections spokesperson Paige Coleman said, via email. “When you see Warden Conover in the community please congratulate her on a fantastic career. We wish her the best of luck on her future endeavors! She will be greatly missed but her impact will never be forgotten.”

Conover was hired as a Corrections Counselor I on May 8, 1984. She was promoted to a Corrections Counselor II at the Wichita Work Release Facility in September 1987, and then to a Unit Team Manager in June 1989.

She was quickly promoted to Deputy Warden at the Wichita Work Release Facility in September 1990, then to Warden in May 1992.
