ACPD Confirms Death Of Local Teen; Case Will Be Reviewed By County Attorney

Ark City Police have released the following statement in regard to the death of 17-year-old Jonathan Szymoniak.

A 17-year-old Arkansas City boy has died after being shot unintentionally by an adult family member during a shooting incident Saturday night.

The Arkansas City Fire-EMS and Police departments were dispatched at 9:46 p.m. Nov. 9 to a residence in the 500 block of South D Street for a report of a gunshot victim.
First responders arrived and located a 17-year-old Arkansas City male with a gunshot wound. He had been struck in the face with a bullet from a 9-millimeter handgun.

Police determined the victim was shot unintentionally by a family member who was handling the gun.

He was transported by the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department to South Central Kansas Medical Center and later airlifted to a Wichita-area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The victim died Wednesday from complications related to his gunshot injury. An autopsy is pending.

This incident remains under investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the results will be forwarded to the Cowley County Attorney’s Office for review to determine if any charges should be filed.

An Ark City teen who was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the face during a weekend incident at his home died Wednesday afternoon.

The mother of 17-year-old Jonathan Szymoniak told KSOK-NewsCow her son passed away just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

17-year-old Jonathan Szymoniak is a patient in the surgical intensive care unit of Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, his mother, Natasha Szymoniak, told KSOK-NewsCow Tuesday morning. His condition has worsened since he was first taken to the hospital Saturday.

Around 9:30 p.m. the day of the incident, medical emergency crews were called to the 500 block of South D for the report of a gunshot injury.

Natasha Szymoniak said her son was accidentally shot with a handgun by his 19-year-old stepbrother. Ark City Police Chief Dan Ward said more information on the incident will be released soon.

Natasha Szymoniak said the incident occurred in a bedroom. The bullet struck a cell phone Jonathan Szymoniak was using and then hit him in the jaw.

“It was a terrible accident,” she said.

Jonathan Szymoniak is to become a father later this month.
