The surgical center expansion also includes the hospital’s new cardiac catheterization lab. This expansion is part of Phase 1 of the hospital’s Second Century Campaign.

William Newton Hospital’s full-time cardiologist, Dr. Alaa Boulad, MD, is board-certified in internal medicine, specializes in treating disorders of the heart, including the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and much more.

Dr. Boulad can also treat blockages of the legs.

Diabetics and people with leg pain or wounds can really benefit from this treatment. Dr. Boulad is accepting new patients and scheduling appointments.

Combined, the new cath lab team has over 19 years of experience. The team includes two RNs, two technologists, and a cath lab manager.

“When you’re talking about the heart, or any vessels of the body, time is extremely important,” Cath Lab Manager Chris Graham said. “The sooner those patients can be treated the better quality of life they can have.”

Cuevas

Brandy Cuevas is the hospital’s administrative director of cardiovascular services.

William Newton Cardiology clinic will provide office consults and follow-up appointments as well as office electrocardiograms (ECG or EKG).

In addition to the procedures offered in the cath lab, patients can have all cardiac testing done at William Newton Hospital including echocardiograms, stress tests, and lab work.

Patients experiencing these symptoms should seek treatment for a possible cardiac event:

o Pressure, tightness, pain, aching sensation in the chest or arms that may spread to your neck, jaw, or back

o Nausea, indigestion, heartburn, or abdominal pain

o Shortness of breath

o Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness

Patients experiencing numbness, leg pain when walking, coldness in the lower leg or foot, or discoloration should seek treatment for a possible blockage.
