Health Dept. Says Active COVID Cases Lowest Since October; Deaths Now At 59

Cases of COVID-19 continue in Cowley County and two more deaths have been added, according to a news release from the City-Cowley County Health Department.

As of Friday, deaths in the county now number 59 since the pandemic began.

According to Monday’s report from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Cowley County has added 76 new cases over the weekend for a total of 3,325 since the first case in the county was confirmed on April 2.

The health department said it as tested 11,539 people for the virus so far, as of Friday.

Also, the health department said there have been 647 tests performed in the county in the past 10 days, with 70 active positive cases. That is the lowest number of positive active cases in the county since Oct. 27.

With the announcement of the transition to Phase 2 of the Kansas Vaccination Plan, demand is growing by the day, the health department said.

“We are still receiving limited supplies of vaccine but are working diligently to vaccinate as many of those in the phase 2 as possible,” Cowley County Public Health Officer Tom Langer stated in the news release. “We have begun contacting and scheduling those folks over 65 who are on the waiting list we’ve been compiling since December.

“We would love to vaccinate large numbers of folks in Cowley County in a relatively short time frame but are constrained currently by very short supplies of vaccine. But we have begun gearing up for the hopeful eventuality of larger vaccine supplies and vaccination capacity.

“When it finally happens, we’ll be ready.”
