KBI Still Working To Identify A Suspect In Cowley State Lake Shooting Dec. 22

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is continuing to work to develop a suspect or suspects in a shooting at the Cowley County State Fishing Lake late last year.

On Dec. 22, 37-year-old Joel Leon-Santos was found suffering from a gunshot wound at the lake when authorities responded to the report of a shooting. Live-saving measures were attempted but Leon-Santos died of his injuries.

No suspect or suspects have been publicly identified by name, however, residents living near the lake said the KBI had canvassed door-to-door for information. It was clear there was some idea as to who may be responsible.

No arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing.

Leon-Santos was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cowley County attorney Larry Schwartz said he’d been briefed on the incident but no formal charges have been filed against any suspect or suspects.
