Election: Winfield’s Roth Beats Incumbent In 79th; Trimmer Wins; Cowley Votes No

The next representative of the Kansas 79th Dist. in the state House of Representatives will be from Winfield.

Preliminary results show that challenger Webster Roth defeated incumbent Cheryl Helmer, Mulvane, in the Republican primary Tuesday night. Unofficial final totals from Cowley and Sumner Counties show Roth with 2,210 votes to 1,875 for Helmer.

In the Democratic primary, Kris Trimmer defeated Cristel Heffron Love. Unofficial results out of Cowley and Sumner show Trimmer with 1,314 votes to 329 for Love.

Both Trimmer and Roth are from Winfield and the winner in November will represent the 79th. Helmer was trying for a third two-year term.

In 2018, Helmer defeated Kris Trimmer’s husband, Ed Trimmer, who had served 13 years in the state house.

IN OTHER ELECTION NEWS:

Kansas voters have rejected a state constitutional amendment that would have further restricted abortion rights in the state. 

Cowley County voters also said no to the so-called Value Them Both amendment. Unofficial results show 4,633 people (52 percent) voted no and 4,240 (48 percent) voted for the amendment.

In Sumner County, 3,574 people voted for the amendment and 3,218 voted against it.
