Cowley County commissioners Thursday morning removed Lance Leis from his position as county appraiser.
Leis was immediately placed on administrative leave, with pay, through the remainder of his current contract, which ends June. 30. His contract will not be renewed thereafter.
Commissioners expect to have an interim appraiser in place by next week and said a media statement would be released regarding who is chosen for that job. Prior to making their decision, commissioners met in private session for about half an hour.
A group of a dozen or so property owners, who attended the meeting, applauded the decision not to renew Leisís contract.
Last week, several dozen people attended a meeting of the county commission in a show of dissatisfaction with Leisís work as appraiser. Many property owners have appealed decisions the appraiser has made in regard to classification and valuation.
Commissioners said the departure of Leis will not affect any changes the appraiser made. Landowners will still be required to make their way through the appeals process.
Leis was not in attendance.
