Trash dumped in rural Cowley County Thursday led authorities to two Ark City men who were arrested and could face charges for littering.

Around 4:30 p.m., a report was made of trash being strewn about on 51st Rd. from 222nd Rd. to 252nd Rd. Eventually trash was found scattered in various places in the same general area.

Some of the items being thrown away contained information that provided investigators with leads on possible suspects, Cowley County undersheriff Bill Mueller said. The junk and bags of trash recovered was enough to fill the back of two pickup trucks.

After further investigation, Ernest Franklin Wood, 32, and Nathan Frederick Morgan, 34, both were arrested on a charge of criminal littering. Their bond was set at $300 and they spent a night in jail before bonding out Friday morning.

Mueller said the men told sheriff’s investigators that they had been ordered by code enforcement officials in Ark City to clean up property within the city. Rather than pay to take the trash to the dump, they disposed of it outside the city limits.

“Fortunately there were things in the trash that helped us to locate those responsible,” Mueller said. “We don’t always find the people that dump trash off and leave it.”
