An early morning fire Monday gutted a Winfield home and kept firefighters busy for several hours.
Around 2:28 a.m., crews were called to 721 Menor for the report of a house fire. No one was home at the time of the blaze and no injuries were reported, according to Peter Rowley of the Winfield Fire Dept.
“There was a lot of fire in that house,” Rowley said. “It had a pretty good head start on us.”
It took about two hours to bring the fire under control and it was some time before investigators could enter the structure. Extensive damage and a partially-collapsed roof made navigating the burned home a challenge.
An official cause of the fire has yet to be determined, though the two-story home is thought to be a total loss, Rowley said.
County property records listen the owners of the home as Ira J. and Stephanie A. Payne. The property is valued at around $27,000.
Crews from Burden, Ark City and Udall assisted at the scene of the fire.
