An Ark City man has died as a result of an accident Sunday afternoon near the Kansas-Oklahoma border in Kay County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Brian J. Cummings, 34, was taken to the hospital in Ark City after the accident and later succumbed to his injuries. Two other people also were hospitalized.

Cummings, according to a report on the accident, was southbound on U.S. 77 when he crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2009 Ford F-150 driven by James L. Edwards, 81, of Wichita.

A northbound SUV then struck Cummings’ vehicle. Cummings was pinned in his vehicle for about 25 minutes before being extricated.

Edwards was taken to the hospital, treated and released. A female passenger in his vehicle, Odie M. Edwards, 87, Wichita, was transported by air ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was in fair condition this morning, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The driver of the third vehicle was treated and released from the hospital. All but Cummings were wearing seat belts, according to the report.

The crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. just south of Native Lights Casino near the intersection of 77 and Home Road.
