A roadway ramming incident in Sumner County Wednesday afternoon has ended peacefully and an investigation is continuing, Sheriff Darren Chambers said.
Around 2:30 p.m., Wellington police and sheriff’s personnel were called to an incident that involved as many as five vehicles. Chambers said a group from Sedgwick County pursued a Sumner County man from Wichita to Wellington to Mayfield and then back to Wellington.
At various times vehicles were rammed into one another.
“At this point we’re really trying to determine who was a victim, who was running and who was chasing,” Chambers said. “All the players are here and being interviewed.”
The scene caught some passersby by surprise. Officers had their guns trained on a suspect vehicle in the parking lot at the local Orscheln store at 1203 W. Eighth, also known as U.S. Highway 160, in Wellington.
Store employees said the incident did not involve the business and workers were asked to stay inside.
Chambers said guns were drawn as a precaution because there were reports some parties involved may have had firearms in their possession.
So far, no guns had been found in possession of anyone involved in the incident, he said.
A written report of the event was expected to be released later today or early Thursday.
