Two tree trimmers Monday afternoon uncovered what are believed to be human skeletal remains in an area northwest of Winfield, according to Cowley County Sheriff Don Read.
The discovery was made just before 3 p.m. in a tree row on a private access road south of 146th Rd.
Sheriff’s investigators and nine deputies processed the area of the discovery yesterday afternoon, evening and again Tuesday. The area is still being processed.
The investigation and processing of the area will last into Wednesday.
At this point, Read said, there is no evidence of foul play but because investigators don’t have enough information this early into the investigation it is being worked as unknown circumstances.
Positive identification of the skeletal remains are pending examination by a forensic anthropologist and DNA testing by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The investigation is ongoing. Further information will be released when it is available.
