Bill Docking will step down as CEO of Union State Bank early next year, the bank said Thursday. A plan is in place for Eric Kurtz to be his successor.

It will mark the first time in 55 years that the bank will have a CEO who is not a member of the Docking family. Former Kansas Gov. Robert Docking - Bill’s father - served as CEO from 1957 until his death in 1983.

Bill Docking plans to remain actively involved as chairman of the board for the bank and will continue to have an office in Ark City.

“This will be an orderly transition for Union State Bank,” Docking said in a written statement. “The leadership change formalizes the board’s carefully planned succession process.”

Kurtz is to become CEO in early 2014. He has more than 20 years banking experience and joined Union State in 2009 as executive vice president and chief lending officer.

He was named corporate president in 2011.

Kurtz is a native of Winfield and holds degrees from Cowley College and Southwestern College. He graduated with honors from the graduate school of banking at the University of Wisconsin.

As CEO, Kurtz will oversee banking operations in all markets.
