Twenty-one-year-old Errol Halverstadt and 29-year-old Danny Stowell Jr. have been identified as the two Winfield-area men killed in the accident near Newkirk this morning.
Stowell was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, when he lost control of his 2002 Lincoln four-door and left the roadway. The accident scene was discovered around 6:35 this morning near the intersection of La Cann Rd. and Fork Rd. northeast of Newkirk.
The vehicle rolled several times and both men were ejected more than 100 feet from the vehicle, according to the report. Both were dead at the scene. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt and officers detected the odor of alcohol on Stowell.
The accident occurred on a two-lane gravel roadway and the men were traveling at an unsafe speed, investigators said in the report.
