An Ark City student was seriously injured Monday after falling from playground equipment at Roosevelt Elementary School, school district officials said.

12-year-old Sarah Darby was hanging from monkey bars by her knees when she fell several feet and landed on her neck, according to updates from her family. She required surgery and it could be several weeks before doctors know if she will fully recover.

Darby was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later transported via air ambulance to a Wichita hospital.

“Our thought’s and prayers are with the student’s family and friends,” the district said in a statement released through spokesperson Alisha Call.

While no other students were injured, several were believed to have witnessed the incident. Counselors are being made available to help students and staff members cope, officials said.

Roosevelt is located at 300 North B. in Ark City.
