A 3-year-old child remained hospitalized in Wichita this morning after being struck by an SUV in Ark City Monday evening.

Around 5:30 p.m., officers were called to the 1100 block of N. First in response to the accident. Prior to police arriving, the child had been transported to a local hospital in a privately-owned vehicle.

The child sustained head and leg injuries and was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. An investigation into the accident is continuing.

Police investigators determined the child had apparently stepped into the traffic way while the vehicle was passing and was struck. The driver, Mryna Torres, Ark City, cooperated fully with police.

She was cited for having an expired driverís license and no proof of insurance.

The child was placed in the pediatric ICU at Wesley and has remained there since arrival. The injuries reported by hospital staff include a fractured right leg, complex injuries to the right foot, and major dental damage.

Hospital officials said the child was scheduled for surgery this morning in Wichita.

The name of the child is being withheld at this time.
