Ark City Chief of Police Sean Wallace will retire from the department next month and take a job in Guatemala.
Wallace made the announcement this morning through his Facebook page. He said he will leave Sept. 29 for Guatemala City to work for the U.S. State Dept.
His final day with the department is Sept. 23.
Wallace was named chief in 2006.
He began his career with the Sedgwick Co. Sheriff's Department in Wichita serving until 1991.
After two years in youth ministry Chief Wallace returned to law enforcement in Ark City in 1993, according to information available from the city.
City manager Nick Hernandez said the city would begin advertising for candidates within the next few weeks. The application process will be open to internal and external candidates.
A process and timeline will be addressed specifically once the advertisement is published, he said.
The city hopes to have someone in place by the beginning of 2014.
