Mark Flickinger - art instructor at Cowley College - is among 14 finalists asked to submit designs for a mural at the State Capitol building in Topeka.
Flickinger was recently notified he was a semifinalist chosen from a group of 37 mural artists and collaborative groups that submitted applications. He has until April 1, 2014 to come up with a series of designs.
A panel will reviews those submission and finalists will be selected next summer.
In 2010, the Kansas Legislature approved a bill calling for a mural at the Capitol to commemorate the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. The mural will be displayed on the wall outside the Supreme Court chambers.
A call for artists was made last year.
The mural will be paid for by private dollars. Flickinger will submit designs for the mural and work on the best way to tell the story of Brown v Board of Education visually.
If Flickinger is selected to conduct the mural he plans on doing it in sections and then having it transported.
Along with the Request for Qualification, Flickinger submitted photos of the murals he has done in Indiana, Kansas City, and Topeka.
