Former Cowley County Attorney Jim Spring - who was currently serving as deputy county attorney under Christopher Smith - died unexpectedly Sunday at his home.

Spring, 57, was county attorney from 2000 to 2004. Funeral services are set for 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Smith said his office would release a written statement on Spring’s passing on Tuesday.

Spring long served as a deputy county attorney before running for the higher position. When he lost a reelection bid to Smith he returned to a position as deputy.
