A public forum on domestic and sexual violence will be held Oct. 16 in Ark City.
The event is set for 7 p.m. in the Wright Room of Brown Center on the campus of Cowley College. It is sponsored by the Cowley County Democratic Party and Winfield Soroptimists.
The speakers include: Dorothy Stucky Halley, Director of the Victim Services Division of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office; Kathy Wood and Sara Rust-Martin from the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence; and LeeAnn Riediger from the local Safe Homes, Inc. organization.
After making their presentations at the Forum, the panel will answer questions from the audience about the incidence of sexual and domestic violence in Kansas and the issues presented by human trafficking in the state.
“This forum is intended to raise awareness of sexual and domestic violence to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and to inform the public about where they can seek help, rather than promoting any particular political viewpoint,” said Sharon Gordon, Chair of the Cowley County Democrats. “We welcome all members of our community, especially young people, who are interested in this issue and who may want to learn how they can protect themselves.”
“The Winfield Soroptimists have decided to co-sponsor this forum because they support the mission of organizations that help inform and protect victims of sexual and domestic violence,” said Roxann Taylor, President of the Winfield Soroptimists.
Donations for Safe Homes, Inc. will be collected at the Forum. Attendees can bring items such as toilet paper, diapers, baby wipes, cleaning supplies, or paper towels.
Gift cards for local stores are also welcome.
