Ark City Police said they have arrested a man thought to have fired a shotgun into windows at Ark City Middle School early Tuesday morning in an apparent burglary attempt.
20-year-old Casey Blaine Hestand, of Ark City, was booked into jail on multiple charges including attempted burglary and criminal discharge of a firearm, a felony. His bond was set at just over $13,000.
Around 6:50 a.m., police received a call from a middle school employee reporting damage to two window panes and a screen on the northeast side of the building.
Investigators determined the windows had apparently been shot with a shotgun. Window screens were also damaged and it appeared someone had thrown a stone against other windows.
Using video surveillance, police discovered that sometime around 1 a.m., someone drove a vehicle along the northeast side of the school and fired from the vehicle toward the building.
A subject then got of out the car and ran up to the building in what appeared to be an attempt to gain entry. The suspect left the area and is not believed to have entered the school.
No reports of theft were made.
Later in the morning, Ark City Police developed a suspect and began a search for that person. A vehicle was located around 10:30 a.m. and the owner of the vehicle was found a short time later at another location in Ark City.
The vehicle was searched and items thought to be involved in the crime were recovered. Hestand was then arrested. Two Ark City homes were also searched and other evidence was collected.
