A traffic stop in Cowley County Sunday afternoon led to the apprehension of a man and woman said to be in the United States illegally.

Sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle in the 2000 block of K-15 Highway around 3:30 p.m. for a seat belt violation. Additional investigation revealed that the driver, 58-year-old Rigoberto Toledo-Lopez, of Wichita, had a suspended license.

A check with NCIC revealed that Lopez and his passenger, 50-year-old Miriam Elizabeth Perez-Lopez, of Wichita, were wanted on federal warrants as fugitive aliens.

The vehicle was turned over to a family friend and both suspects were taken into custody.

They remained in the Cowley County Jail Monday under a hold through U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
