An inmate that walked away from the Winfield Correctional Facility Friday was found later the same day in Sumner County and taken into custody, according to local authorities.
Around 10:45 p.m., Cowley deputies were sent to an area west of Winfield on U.S. 160 after police received a call from a couple who had given a ride to someone they believed to be suspicious. That man had been dropped off at Casey’s in Oxford.
Cowley officers knew someone had walked away from the correctional facility and sought permission from Sumner authorities to enter that county.
They arrived at Casey’s to find Oxford police had already made contact with the man. He was eventually identified as Andrew D. Vandorn, 22, a correctional facility inmate convicted of crimes in Crawford County.
Vandorn was booked into the Cowley County Jail on a hold for the Kansas Dept. of Corrections and remained in jail Monday morning.
Vandorn has convictions for aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, burglary and criminal damage to property.
