Cowley County commissioner Wayne Wilt doesnít just cast votes and scrutinize budget reports - when need be he can help chase down a crime suspect.
Such was the case Saturday afternoon when the first-term commissioner from Winfield helped track down a driver who hit Wiltís truck and left the scene.
Winfield Police report that Wilt and Virakone Bouaravahn were involved in an accident at the intersection of 19th and Broadway. Wilt told KSOK News that immediately after the crash, Bouaravahn backed up and pulled away from the scene.
The commissioner - who has nearly two decades of experience in law enforcement - gave chase and located the suspect nearby.
ďI pulled up behind his vehicle close enough to block his exit,Ē Wilt said in an interview Sunday night.
Thatís when the incident turned toward the strange, the commissioner said. Bouaravahn is said to have left his vehicle behind and traveled on foot to a nearby residence where he changed clothes.
He then met up with police and spoke with them for a time before fleeing on foot. Police pursued Bouaravahn and even attempted unsuccessfully to subdue the suspect with a Taser.
Bouaravahn was eventually taken into custody and faces charges for leaving the scene of an accident, obstruction, escape from custody and driving with a suspended license.
No injuries were reported as a result of the accident. Wilt said his vehicle suffered minor damage.
