An attack on a prominent Sumner County lawyer early Sunday has resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old Wellington man.

Charles L. Kitch Jr. was booked into jail on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass. His bond was set at $100,000.

Kitch is accused of entering the Wellington home of 72-year-old Jack Potucek and striking him with an object. Potucek is a well-known local attorney and serves as legal counsel to the Sumner County commission.

Potucek is recovering at his home.

The attack is said to have happened at Potucek’s residence in the 1000 block of N. Washington, around 8 a.m. The alleged victim became aware of the suspect, who was in a rear enclosed-porch area of the home.

When Potucek opened the door, he was struck by the assailant, who had an object in his hand. The men ended up outside in the backyard of the home, where Potucek was able to get the attention of a neighbor who called 911.

Police continue to investigative a motive in the attack, which is believed to have been unprovoked, Wellington police chief Tracy Heath told Sumner NewsCow Monday.

Potucek was treated and released from the hospital the day of the attack.
