Event offers chance to dump old electronics

Old computers, televisions and microwaves are among the variety of items that can be dropped off during Cowley County Electronic Waste Recycle Day later this month.

A collection site will be set up at the Winfield Fairgrounds from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. April 27 for residents to drop off their electronic items. Those making a drop must enter the fairgrounds on 14th.

A second pick-up date is scheduled for Aug. 28 at the Agri-Business building in Ark City. The program is free to residents but a $1 minimum donation is requested to help offset transportation costs.

Businesses may participate as well, but a $5 fee per television or monitor will be charged.

For a list of all the items you can dispose of as E-waste, see the Conservation District’s flier.

E-Waste and its disposal is an ever-growing issue because items like computers, televisions and cell phones often contain toxic substances.

These recycle days will help ensure items be refurbished, reused or recycled to help ease the need to use virgin resources for future electronic equipment, officials said.

The conservation district along with Cowley County ? K-State Research and Extension, City of Winfield, Sunflower RC&D, Winfield Correctional Facility, ABCDE, USD 465 and Southwestern College’s Green Team are combining resources to conduct this event.
