Magnitude 4.7 quake hits near OKC Monday

UPDATE: 9 p.m. Monday – The USGS reports a that another quake rumbled Oklahoma and areas north – including Cowley County.

The magnitude 4.7 quake was said to have occurred east of Oklahoma City Monday around 8:50 p.m. Social media sites and other news outlets report the tremors were felt well into Kansas.


UPDATE: 11:44 P.M. – From emergency management officials in Ark City just now:

The United States Geological Survey in Boulder, Colo. indicated that around 10:53 p.m. central, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred approximately 45 miles east of Oklahoma City.

The quake was felt across much of central and eastern Oklahoma and up through eastern Kansas. Butler County Emergency Management officials reported minor damage to a residence in the Rose Hill area with details not full known yet.

The quake was also felt at the National Weather Service Office in Wichita.


A magnitude 4.7 earthquake centered east of Oklahoma City early Saturday morning was felt by many residents in Cowley County and other parts of Kansas, according to social media reports.

The quake was reported at 2:12 a.m. CDT, according to the United States Geological Survey website. It was reported to be centered 6 miles north of Prague, Okla.

The initial quake was followed by at least two more quakes of lesser magnitude.

No damage or injuries have been reported.

Residents in and around Winfield and Arkansas City reported feeling the quake, although not everyone in Cowley County felt it. Other reports were coming from as far away as Wichita, Parsons, Independence, and Kansas City.
