WELLINGTON – Walter Edward Taylor III, 21, of Wellington was arrested for second degree murder in connection with a deadly shooting on U.S. 160 Wednesday.

Taylor was booked into the Sumner County jail and is being held without bond. He was arrested at 1:41 p.m. and was booked in the county jail at 5:27 p.m.

The Wellington Police Dept. had two suspects in custody after a shooting that occurred near a bridge at the 800 block of E. 16th near the Dollar General Store around 1:30 p.m. yesterday.

According to Police Chief Tracy Heath, two vehicles were going westbound.

One was a maroon-colored passenger car and a second one was a black Ford Ranger pickup truck when someone shot at the pickup, hitting the victim in the upper chest.

A handgun was used in the incident, Heath said.

The victim of the shooting has not been named publicly. Also, there has been no word on the status of the second person in the passenger car.

“We have no idea what led up to the shooting,” Heath said. “Nor do we know the sequence of events at this time. We are currently interviewing the suspects and will be doing a search of the vehicle later today.”

U.S. 160 was blocked from the Roundabout to Woodlawn Ave. interchange during the initial stage of the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
