Minor Kitchen Fire In Winfield Prompts Fire Marshal To Offer Safety Tips

Winfield Fire Marshal Chad Mayberry has released information in regard to a kitchen fire this morning in Winfield:

At 8:10 a.m. on Monday morning, the Winfield Fire/EMS Department was dispatched to 720 E. 19th Ave. for a reported kitchen fire. Upon our arrival, the homeowner was  outside of the residence, and we found a small fire in the kitchen above and around the kitchen stove. The fire was quickly extinguished, and damage was limited to items on top of and around the kitchen stove.

The homeowner had finished cooking breakfast and had left the kitchen a few minutes prior to the fire occurring. Combustible items near the top of the kitchen stove ignited  shortly after she left the kitchen. The homeowner attempted to smother the fire but was unable to completely extinguish the fire prior to calling 911.

Arkansas City, Burden, and Udall Fire Departments were initially dispatched to respond for assistance but were disregarded prior to their arrival on scene. Officers with the Winfield Police Department assisted with traffic control near the scene.

We would like to use this opportunity to remind everyone to be careful about keeping combustible materials away from heat producing appliances. Some additional cooking fire safety tips are:

• Never leave items unattended while cooking.

• Make sure the handles for pots are pointing towards the side or back and are not over top of another burner that is on.

• Keep a lid or cookie sheet handy to place on top of a pot if a fire occurs.

• Shut off the heat source if a fire occurs.

• Salt or baking soda can be used on very small cooking fires.

• Do not use water on grease fires, this will cause the fire to spread.

• Do not use flour or similar items on grease fires. This can cause a small dust  explosion and may cause the fire to spread.
