April rainstorms eligible for federal money, too

Cowley County officials learned Thursday that heavy rains that hit the area beginning April 25 will be eligible for disaster reimbursement through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The formal announcement came a day after county officials learned that damage from a March ice storm would be covered. Local governments can apply for 75 percent reimbursement for the cost of clean-up, repair and replacement of disaster-damaged structures.

Several local entities ? including a number of rural townships ? have reported damage from flooding that totals $232,000 countywide, according to an emergency management official. The dollar amount is preliminary and could go up as damage is assessed.

The April rains flooded the Winfield Fairground in the run up to KANZA Days and also closed some township roads for several days.
