Agencies team to battle drinking issues

A number of area law enforcement agencies joined forces over the weekend to combat alcohol related issues. Four people were arrested and one juvenile was cited, according to Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore.

The first operation is referred to as a “Clean Team” project and involves compliance checks at local drinking establishments to ensure city and state laws are being followed.

The police and fire departments, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the county sheriff’s office, the alcohol and beverage control agency, community corrections and probation services were involved.

Following the compliance checks, a saturation patrol was conducted. Additional officers were placed on patrol with an increased focus on detecting and arresting impaired drivers, DeVore said.

As a result of the activities, the following arrests were made: Michael Hanes, 58, Winfield, and Valicia Fromm, 23, Winfield, were arrested for driving under the influence. Carmen Bryant, 46, Arkansas City, was arrested for violating the terms of her probation. Bradley Smith, 24, Winfield, was arrested for possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended and no proof insurance. One juvenile was cited for consuming alcohol.

DeVore said the department is committed to enforcing alcohol related laws to promote a safer community. Anyone with information concerning alcohol offenses are encouraged to call the police department at 221-5555. There is also a hot line that allows anonymous reporting of underage alcohol violations – 1-866-MUST-B-21 or 1-866-687-8221.
