Crowd expected for air show at Strother

Randy Norris, a member of the planning committee for Strother Field’s Anniversary celebration, told commissioners more than 5,000 people are expected to attend the air show June 29 and 30.

“We’ve worked hard and long,” Norris said. “I think we’re going to have a pretty decent air show.”

The Strother Field Industrial Park is jointly owned by the cities of Arkansas City and Winfield. It was built as a World War II Army Air Force training base and today is home to a number of successful businesses and industries.

“I know Strother Field in the past has been kind of a political hot potato between the cities and the county,” Norris said. “I would like to see us give (visitors) a good presentation of Cowley County.”

Norris asked for no financial help from the county but did ask for support with manpower and some machinery.

“I think this will be a good family event,” said commissioner Gary Wilson. “This is something that’s good for everybody.”
