Jury selection in Parsons case set to start

Jury selection will begin Tuesday in Newkirk, Okla., for an elderly Winfield man accused of trying to kill his wife last September in Ponca City, Okla.

Harley Parsons, 86, shot his wife, Barbara, twice before a police officer arrived. He told Mrs. Parsons he was going to shoot himself after he killed her.

Parsons told police he drove his wife to Ponca City from their Winfield home, and that they enjoyed looking at the large trees in the area of Sugar Maple.

Mrs. Parsons, 83, was hospitalized for several days but recovered from her injuries. She filed for divorce in May. The case is pending. Parsons has been jailed in Kay County since the shooting.

Potential jurors will report to Kay County District Court on Monday when they will be examined to determine if they are qualified to sit on the jury in the case being tried. Prosecutors have said the trial could take a week.

Parsons could be sentenced to a life sentence if convicted.
