Mulvane pair arrested after highway incident

Two Mulvane men were arrested late Friday in Udall for allegedly firing airsoft handguns at a passenger vehicle while driving on K-15, a Cowley County Sheriff’s Office report said.

The names of the two men, aged 18 and 19, were not released. Both have been charged with criminal discharge of a firearm, according to Undersheriff Don Read. The 18-year-old driver posted $7,500 bond, but the 19-year-old remained in jail as of late afternoon.

“Both suspects fired numerous pellets at the victim” who was a passenger in a Toyota 4Runner, said Read.

No injuries or damages were reported and the suspects claimed to know the 17-year-old victim of the shooting, who is also from Mulvane. The victim was one of six passengers in the 4Runner, Read said, and was sitting in the back seat with the window down.

Referred to as “a rolling disturbance” by Udall Chief of Police Matt Dennis, the incident involved officers from four different police agencies including Udall, Sumner County, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, around 6:25 p.m. Udall Police Office Perry Lambert contacted the sheriff’s office and requested deputies help search for a red Chevrolet Blazer which was headed south on K-15 from Mulvane, the report said. A Sumner County officer had told Lambert persons in the blazer were observed firing a weapon at another vehicle traveling on K-15. The blazer was also driving “in a very reckless manner,” the report said.

Lambert spotted the blazer entering Udall and stopped the vehicle. Trooper Bob Levelle was called in to assist with the traffic stop, according to the report.

During a search of the 4Runner, officers discovered open beer cans, the report said. One minor was cited for possession of alcohol and taken into custody. He was later released to his parents. Another passenger was cited for traveling with an open container.
