USD 465 getting word out on lunch program

Parents of students in USD 465 will be receiving a letter from superintendent Marvin Estes in the next few days providing information about the federal lunch program operated by school districts.

Most patrons are aware that students may be eligible for free or reduced price lunches based on family size and income.

What is less widely-known is that the number of students who qualify for free or reduced price lunches has an impact on overall school district funding in several ways.

For every student who qualifies for free lunch, the school district receives an additional $1,700 per student. If the percent of students who qualify reaches 40 percent of district enrollment, the district receives an additional $217 and if the percent reaches 50 percent the district receives an additional $435.

This year, 33 percent of USD 465 students participated in the lunch program.
