Bomb threat suspect may face adult charge

Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith has filed a motion to prosecute a Winfield High School teen as an adult for allegedly making a bomb threat at the school last spring.

The motion was filed in time for a hearing in juvenile court late Wednesday morning for Chad Lewis. The case was continued until Aug. 15.

“It just allows us some other options,” Smith said.

Lewis was 16 when the alleged threat was made shortly before the end of the last school year. One juvenile criminal complaint was filed against Lewis claiming that on May 15th he communicated a threat to cause the evacuation of the high school.

A series of threats were actually made that week. Both the high school and middle school were evacuated on that Friday because of the threats. Nothing unusual was discovered at the schools.

Another boy, Michael Mason, was charged with making a threat in March. He was recently found to be a juvenile offender and placed on supervised probation for one year, ordered to perform 300 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the student newspaper.

A third youth has been charged but the case is closed to the public because he is only 12 years old.
