Vote may come soon on Winfield animal regs

New rules for dogs, cats and chickens could go before Winfield city commissioners for a vote Monday, a city official said.

Among the changes is a ban on chickens within the city limits. Commissioners were to hear from those opposed to such an ordinance at their 4 o’clock work session Thursday.

If approved, the new regulations would go into effect in July 2008. The rules would require registration and tags for cats and would outlaw the tethering of dogs in addition to a crackdown on chickens, according to city manager Warren Porter.

Commissioners have considered stricter animal codes for years and began developing the proposed rules earlier this year. A final vote would come next week, assuming there are no changes to be made to proposed ordinances, Porter said.
