Local pedal puller brings home national title

An eight-year old pedal pull champ from Geuda Springs has brought home a national championship.

Logan Butler won his age division in a national competition Sept.22 at the Corn Palace in South Dakota. Butler’s journey to the title started at a fair in South Haven. He qualified for nationals with a victory in his age division at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Top three finishers at the state level advance to nationals. At nationals, Butler topped a field of 29 contestants from 18 states. He trained by riding a bicycle daily, most of the time uphill.

By the end of round one, only Butler and one other contestant from Nebraska had a full pull of 50 feet.

“We knew a 2nd place finish was guaranteed at this point, but Logan was eager to pull again for the win,” Brett Butler, Logan’s father, said.

For his efforts, Logan Butler, brought home a trophy and a $100 savings bond. Butler’s two brothers also compete in pedal pull competitions and their parents, Brett and Cathy Butler, promised to make the trip to nationals if any of the boys won state.

The national event was sanctioned by the National Pedal Puller Association. Logan Butler has now qualified to compete at an international event. Details of that event are not yet available.
