Charges pending after shots fired Saturday

No arrests were made Saturday at the scene of an early morning incident involving a firearm that took place outside a home at Ninth and Walton but charges could be pending, said Lt. Kurt Weber with the Winfield Police Department.

“Items of evidence (collected at the scene) will be forwarded to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation lab for processing,” Weber said.

At 3:30 a.m. police responded to a private residence located at 424 W. Ninth where shots were reported being fired. Police questioned at least ten adults at the scene and seized a handgun, several rounds of ammunition and other contraband, Weber said. A search warrant was obtained for the seized items.

Winfield police with the assistance of the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office closed a portion of Walton north of Ninth during the investigation which started as soon as police arrived and continued well into the afternoon.

Weber was uncertain whether anything was being shot at in particular, but did say rounds were fired into the ground. It did not appear shots were fired at people, he said.

The leutenant indicated it was an isolated incident.

“It had nothing to do with the incident last weekend,” Weber said, referring to a shooting at the Jump Start convenience store on Main where at least two persons exchanged gunfire and an Arkansas City man was injured.

Criminal charges in the case are dependent on evidence compiled by the KBI, Weber said.
