Former Cowley County man killed in Hawaii

A former Cowley County man died Saturday afternoon after wrecking his motorcycle in Honolulu, Hawaii, according to his family. The man was identified as Robert Moberg, 26.

Moberg was riding with five other motorcyclists when he lost control of his 2002 Honda at a bend on a winding road known for accidents, according to a report published in the Honolulu Advertiser. His motorcycle veered off the road and hit a guardrail and he was ejected from the bike.

The motorcycle spun back onto the roadway and into the path of another cycle, causing an accident. Others were injured but their conditions were not considered life threatening.

“He loved to ride motorcycles,” Sara Wadleigh, Moberg’s mother, said this morning. “He had that motorcycle for awhile. Riding was a regular Saturday afternoon for him.”

Police and family said Moberg and those he was riding with were wearing helmets. Her son may have been speeding, Wadleigh said.

Moberg lived in Dexter until the age of 12. He moved to Winfield with his family in 1991 and attended the First Christian Church. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1999, Wadleigh said.

By 2000, Moberg had joined the army and was stationed in Honolulu. He continued to live there after leaving the service and had married.

Moberg had visited Cowley County as recently as this fall when he came to see his mother in Arkansas City and friends in Winfield. His father, Ken Moberg, lives in Lindsborg.

“He came to visit in October and I’m really grateful for that,” Wadleigh said.

Ken Moberg and another family member were traveling to Hawaii Monday to begin planning funeral arrangements. Details have not been worked out but there will be a memorial service in both Hawaii and Cowley County, Wadleigh said.

“He knew a lot of people and had a lot of friends in Winfield,” she said.
