RAMBLINGS: What were we talking about?

My close friends and I have shared our deepest secrets over the last 10 or 15 years. We’ve talked about our kids and James Taylor and our grandkids and Michael Bolton and diets and Josh Grogan, and then, as the years passed, moved on to vitamins, hormone replacements and the benefits vs the danger of liposuction.

One friend thinks we should be able to stop by some little shop somewhere and get dipped upside down in a magical goop that will counter gravity.

She pops up every so often with something so profound that it needs to be recorded for all posterity. This latest witticism occurred during a recent birthday gathering for a friend (the one who kept my not bright pink but brighter than faded pink purse.)

I won’t use Marilyn’s name in the column since I don’t know whether she minds or not. But our little group was hanging out in my kitchen and, to be perfectly honest, were enjoying a wee bit of the bubbly.

Marilyn was telling a story and then was interrupted and forgot what she was saying. “We’ve got to start inviting someone younger than us so she can tell (remind) us what we’re talking about.”

Forgetfulness ? it happens to us all. Who hasn’t put the sugar in the fridge and the butter in the cupboard or set the temperature on the oven and then forgot to turn it on? Everybody loses keys or forgets their area code or pin number?

We are busy people. We’re simply expected to remember too much.

At the same time, I have to admit some of my conversations are becoming a little scary. For example, Marilyn and I saw a movie Saturday night. We were coming out of the theater when she asked:

“What was the name of that movie we thought was a ‘must see’?”

“What movie?”

“The preview we just saw.”

“What was it about.”

“Well, if I could remember that I could probably remember the name.”

“The name of what?”

“The movie.”

“What movie?”

It was late Sunday afternoon when Marilyn called. “Doesn’t that movie have that girl..you know…the one on……oh, you know which one I mean?”

“What movie?”
