Grain spill holds up Ark City traffic Tuesday

Ark City police officers and other city workers picked up shovels and got to work scooping up two tons of grain that spilled onto the roadway after a trailer tipped near the corner of Madison and Summit Tuesday.

The spill happened around 10 a.m when a small Datsun pickup turned westward onto Madison from Summit, according to an officer at the scene. A shift in weight distribution apparently caused the container portion of the trailer to break free from the trailer’s axle and frame.

The trailer was packed with around four tons of grain. The grain hopper was taken from the scene using heavy equipment and the axle and frame were towed away.

Police had Madison closed to traffic and were diverting drivers for about 30 minutes.
