Overturned semi closes U.S. 160 Tuesday

U.S. 160 between Cowley 3 and Oxford was closed late this morning when an 18-wheeler cattle truck overturned onto its side in the west ditch.

The driver was pinned in the truck but later freed by emergency responders. He was loaded into a Winfield ambulance to be evaluated by paramedics.

Preliminary reports indicated the engine was still running after the truck overturned and that one head of cattle was on the highway and had been injured. At least two dead cows were visible at the scene.

A significant weather alert and high wind advisory was in effect for this area when the accident occurred on a straight stretch of the two-lane highway. It’s unknown at this time whether the weather conditions contributed to the accident.

Cowley County Sheriff, Oxford, Udall and Winfield authorities responded to the scene. The wind chill was five degrees.

The driver was transported to William Newton Hospital.
