Ark City man surrenders after Tues. standoff

An Arkansas City man armed with a pistol threatened his sister and her children Tuesday night but was coaxed by police to surrender without anyone being hurt.

Timothy Lee Paige, 39, also told his sister he was going to die which led her to believe he was suicidal, Ark City Police Chief Sean Wallace said.

Police, Cowley County Sheriff’s officers and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to 425 N. Seventh about 5:30 P.M. The victims had left the house but Paige was still inside and refused to answer the door, Wallace said.

“Officers established a perimeter around the house and surrounding area and attempted to establish contact with the suspect for over 15 minutes,” Wallace said.

One officer was able to reach Paige by phone and asked him to leave the house. Paige started to go out the back door of the house, then went back in when he saw the officers.

“Paige then came out the front door of the house after a short period of time and surrendered to officers without incident,” the chief said.

Paige was arrested for aggravated assault,, criminal threat, criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct. He is being held in the county jail on $19,000 pending a mental health evaluation, according to Wallace.
